A) COPY AFTER PALMA IL VECCHIO. Jacopo Palma il Vecchio (Serina, 1480 (?) – Venice, 1528). Portrait of a woman, known as "The Gaze of Beauty", executed around 1518, oil on canvas, (95 x 80 cm) in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. B) EXECUTED BY GIUSEPPE MAZZOLINI (Camerino, 1806 – Rome, 1876) an Italian painter of academic style. Born in the province of Macerata, he moved to Rome where he became part of the local artistic life. In 1843 he was a member of the Association of Amateurs and Cultors. He distinguished himself in portraiture, genre painting, and the creation of copies of great masters of the past, with particular interest in the female figure (including Raphael, Titian, Guido Reni, Sebastiano del Piombo, and Palma il Vecchio). The portrait depicts a noblewoman, who effectively represents the female model of Renaissance beauty: her face with delicate features, perfectly coiffed hair, a voluptuous physique further emphasized by the use of low-cut garments, which fell in voluminous draperies. In this painting, the intense and brilliant coloration derives from Venetian tonalism. The masterpieces created by Palma il Vecchio, of magnificent compositional value, are a testament to his great ability to portray the refinement of 16th-century female beauty.
