Author : Edwin Hayes 1819-1904
Period: 19th century
Measures H x L x P
A wide view of a gulf immersed in the atmosphere that marks the beginning of sunset, divided by a promontory. In the foreground on the left a palisade with various wrecks, in the center a beach with two fishermen and a mooring post, on the right a fishing boat. In the background on the left are houses of a village, in the center a distant view of a city in the haze, on the right ships approaching. The sensation that is transmitted to us is one of calm quiet, of a real and at the same time ideal space. The characteristics of the painting and the frame date this painting to the mid-19th century. The typology of the roofs of the houses places it in the Northern European area. On first canvas. With restorations that affect only the sky. Wide craquelure due to a thick preparation. Antique non-coeval frame. Measures cm h. 49.5x59.5, with frame cm 74x60 Biography. Edwin Hayes was born in Bristol, England, but grew up in Dublin, Ireland, where his father was a hotelier. He studied art at the Dublin Society Art School and first exhibited at the RHA (Royal Hibernian Academy) in 1842. He remained in Dublin for ten years before moving to London. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, the British Institution, the Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors, becoming a full member of the latter in 1863. Hayes painted seascapes in Ireland, England, Belgium, Holland, France, Spain and Italy, his work invariably depicting ships and boats on the high seas, port scenes or other aspects of the coast.
