Item : 378271
18th-century Roman bow-front chest of drawers
Period: First half of the 18th century
Roman manufacture from the mid-18th century.
Bow-fronted and concave sides, curved legs.
Dimensions: cm h. 101x128x60
Materials: Walnut burl veneer, bois de rose stringing on all drawer, top, and pilaster profiles, and drawer and top paneling. Poplar frame. Original locks. Handles added.
The horizontal grain of the drawer veneering and their original opening with only the key, together with the overall structure, indicate a central Italian, specifically Roman origin. The opening with keys, as the drawer runners wore out, making the opening less efficient, deteriorated the entrance to the keyholes; therefore, it was often customary, during restoration, to repair the runners and add the handles at the same time.
Fair condition with minor restorations consistent with the period.
