Flemish school of the 17th century. Oil painting on canvas. Measurements cm 125x164, with frame cm 130x170. On its original canvas. The work examined under Wood's lamp shows some, non-invasive, restoration work. A cleaning and a careful restoration would make the painting more legible and increase its commercial value. The composition of the painting has similar characteristics, in character, that can be connected to the Willaerts workshop: a distant view of a port city, fishermen on the seashore, unloading and selling the catch on the beach, in the center of the gulf and on the right several ships in motion, imposing clouds always present, the insertion of an intense red color in the clothes, in sharp contrast with the colors used in the pictorial representation of the characters (see photos n. A and B). All typical characteristics that we find in the works of Willaerts' workshop. The painting is an example of the artist's ability to render perspective space. The view of the city, in harmony with the natural elements, in particular the tower inside the castle, counterbalances the pictorial scheme of the cloud formations. The sails of the ships capture the winds blowing into a cloud-laden sky. On the left, the tree, in the foreground, rises towards the sky, and its thick foliage contributes to increasing the grandeur of the scenic composition of the seascape. This painting is a tribute from the artist to enhance the trade on which the nation's wealth was founded; these numerous marine representations executed by Flemish artists, particularly Dutch ones, also alluded to the risks and dangers that sailors had to face in their voyages around the world.
