ELIO ORSI's workshop "The Madonna of the Ghiara"
Period: 16th century
Measures H x L x P
ELIO ORSI's workshop "THE MADONNA OF THE GHIARA". Emilian school from the end of the 16th century. Oil painting on cleaned and relined canvas, see photos. Examined under Wood's lamp, it shows some restoration retouching, particularly on the Madonna's robe, on the tree trunk, on the outline of the cushion, slight touch-ups on the faces that do not alter their expressions, absolutely non-invasive. Canvas size cm 26x20. The artwork depicts the Virgin in prayer while gazing at the child, who looks at her smiling, illuminated by a halo, in a pursuit of infantile naturalness of remote Correggesque ancestry. Behind the Child, on the right, in a distant perspective, a cathedral is traced with simple and quick signs, framed by a mountain and clouds of a vigorous blue color, a color always present in the artist's palette. The contrast, strongly accentuated in the Madonna's robe, of the blue color with the red of the sleeves, in addition to the intense pink drape, which frames the foot under the robe, exhibits the chiaroscuro characteristics, almost violent, concretized in the artist's workshop; in these realizations the reds are ardent and the blues are intense and velvety like enamels. In the artwork, a fiery sunset, which makes the fronds of the branches and leaves complicit, also shows the characteristics of Lelio Orsi's workshop; in fact, the intense red color in contrast with the blue is often present in the representation of the sky. Even the halo around the child's head expresses the same pictorial peculiarities present in Orsi's works. Another peculiarity of the workshop's works is the presence of the well-highlighted sign in the contours of the drawing of the bodies and faces, as in the artwork under examination, characteristics that we find in the profile of the Madonna and in the outline of the child's body. The painting is similar to the drawing by Lelio Orsi present at the Museum of the Basilica della Ghiara in the introductory room, dedicated to the iconography of the Virgin.
