Henry IV was the first king of the Capetian dynasty, his marriage to Maria de' Medici (in 1699) sanctioned an indirect alliance with the Austrian crown (as evidenced by the two crowns resting on the cushion).
In the Romantic era, already characterized by nascent historicism, the subject recalled both the legitimacy of the French monarchs, especially after the Revolution and Napoleon, and the idea of marriage; even though Henry IV, contradictorily, was known for his manifest infidelity.
