18th-century Flemish School "Snowy Landscape".
Period: Second half of the 18th century
Measures H x L x P
18th-century Flemish School. Signed, unidentified artist, and dated 1790. Measurements cm h. 32x24, with frame 39.5x47.5. The subject depicts the snowy courtyard of a farm enclosed between two farmhouses with snow-covered roofs. A farmer with his wife and son, placed in the center of the scene, is slaughtering a large pig. On the left, inside an arch, another farmer heats utensils over a fire. Smoke comes out of the chimney. A bare and snowy tree closes the background view. The sloping roofs and the woman's headdress indicate the Nordic origin of the work. In this small painting, the artist meticulously describes the scene with a wealth of detail, but at the same time the quick and fresh mark, especially in the execution of the figures, manages to give movement and immediacy.
