EMILIAN SCHOOL OF THE 17TH CENTURY. Follower of the artist Elisabetta Sirani. Oil painting on canvas. Cleaned and relined. Dimensions: 52x42.5 cm. The Baby is executed with correct anatomy, and the complexion reveals excellent pictorial quality despite invasive restorations. It should be noted in the painting under examination that the upper part of the shoulders is narrower than the pelvis, the chest is soft and well-defined, and the small nipples are highlighted with grace. The belly is soft and round, with a prominent navel. All of this is attributable to the style of Sirani's workshop. Evidently, Elisabetta, being a woman, knew the anatomy of a child better. The drapery, framing the child's body and executed with remarkable skill, suggests the intervention of a master's hand rather than that of a workshop pupil. The painting has been relined and partially cut to focus attention on the child. Fortunately, the intervention has not penalized the child's face or body anatomy. During relining, it was verified that the painting was folded on the right side, indicating that the work was originally larger. See photos E – F. The entire work is fully covered by old, likely shellac, varnish, which is very deteriorated, and an underlying older varnish. There are several retouchings both before and after the lining, with the lining intervention dating back about the second half of the 20th century. The pictorial matter, observed at high magnification under natural and grazing light, appears compact. Craquelure is visible and present even under the retouchings of the restorations carried out. Examination with a Wood's lamp confirms these observations. See photos A – B – C – D. It's important to remember that restorations in the past were far more invasive than today. The hand supporting the Child has been poorly restored and is covered by many retouchings. I believe that a careful and conscientious cleaning restoration would make the work more legible and pleasing, uncovering some excessively covered and retouched areas. This would facilitate its analysis, significantly increasing its value and potential saleability.
