Bartolomeo Gennari, "Saint Jerome in prayer".
Emilian School of the 17th century. Oil painting on canvas. Dimensions: canvas h. 95x76 cm.
With a non-contemporary 19th-century frame, a French cabaret in gilded wood, h. 111x93 cm.
The painting depicts the Saint with the usual red cloak, accompanied by the skull, a symbol of inspiration for meditation on man's mortal destiny.
The painting reveals evident Guercinesque tones; due to the pictorial mode and style, it can be dated in the first half of the 17th century and associated with the production of Bartolomeo Gennari, or in any case, to be researched around the school of some pupil or follower of the Bolognese Master.
There are affinities with the works of B. Gennari, in particular with the anatomy of the thorax; just observe how the small nipple is depicted.
Other similarities can be found in the anatomical shape of the hand and in the profile of the saint, with marked wrinkles on the forehead and the wide receding hairline, and in the colors, we note the intense red of the cloak, and the complexion with strong chiaroscuro, highlighted by warm brown colors.
