Landscape by Federico Zandomeneghi. Oil painting on panel from the second half of the 19th century Size: h 12 x 21 cm. Zandomeneghi Federico. - Painter (Venice 1841 - Paris 1917). Son of Pietro (1806-1866) and nephew of Luigi (1778-1850), valued sculptors active in Venice in the tradition of A. Canova, Z. enrolled in the Academy in 1856. Having fled Venice to avoid Austrian conscription, after following Garibaldi with the Thousand, in Florence (1862-66) he frequented the Macchiaioli, becoming particularly friendly with the critic D. Martelli. In 1866 he returned to Venice and, from 1874, settled in Paris where he was in contact with the Impressionists. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants (1879, 1880, 1881, 1886) and, in the last years of the century, was helped by the merchant Durand-Ruel. Although strongly attracted and influenced by the art of Degas and Renoir, Z. was nevertheless able to maintain his own personality in the typically Venetian melancholic chromatic sensuality. He preferred to portray flowers and figures but also left landscapes and remarkable portraits. A personal exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 1914 had little success and only after 1922 did his art obtain adequate recognition.
